Our view of the service

Nuffield Health Manchester Diagnostic Centre (MDS) was established in 2016 and is located on the campus of an adjacent NHS hospital in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester. The location is managed by Nuffield Health and serves as a diagnostic imaging centre that accepts both NHS and privately funded patients. MDS also operates in conjunction with a sister location in Manchester that runs specialist diagnostic services, particularly in the field of sport and exercise science, with the same registered manager.

MDS provides computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning, mammography, general (plain film) radiography and ultrasound scanning services. The location predominantly sees adult patients, with a small number of young people aged over 11 years who are provided chest x-rays for visa and immigration purposes.

We found that leaders were very capable and had fostered a positive shared culture amongst staff, who were clearly well-supported to deliver services in a highly efficient and person-centred way. The service had comprehensive and effective systems of governance that enabled leaders to quickly respond to information about performance and risk, work collaboratively with other stakeholders and ensure business continuity. We also observed warm and compassionate clinical interactions between staff and patients that were delivered in a clean, specialised environment that had considered the needs of each patient.

People's experience of this service

During the inspection, we spoke with 12 patients about the care they had received at the service. This included patients from different backgrounds, undergoing different scan types and on both NHS and private referral pathways.

All patients we spoke with were very positive about their experiences with the service, and in many cases were impressed with the care they had received when compared to experiences with other providers. Patients told us that staff overall were “lovely” and they were particularly positive about the facilities and refreshments that were available. Patients also felt they were seen in a timely way and were supported well by staff when they had a question or concern.
