The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has upgraded the rating for Castle Lodge Independent Hospital in Bransholme, Hull, from good to outstanding following an inspection in September.
Castle Lodge Independent Hospital, run by Barchester Healthcare Homes Limited, provides care to older people with mental health conditions. The service cared for ten males on Bluebell Ward and five females on Primrose Ward.
This inspection was carried out as part of CQC’s continual checks on the safety and quality of mental healthcare services.
Following the inspection, CQC has rated the hospital as outstanding for caring and well-led, and rated good for safe, effective and responsive.
Gemma Berry, CQC deputy director of operations for mental health in the north-east, said:
“When we inspected Castle Lodge, we found a service that was led by exceptional leaders supported by a dedicated staff team putting people at the heart of everything they did to deliver the best possible care.
“People and their families gave overwhelmingly positive feedback about the care received, including how kind, compassionate and dedicated staff were. Staff told us they had an ethos of using “lodge love” which we could see in practice during our visit.
“Leaders and staff were exceptional at including people and their families in every stage of their treatment. Families were provided with information and meetings with staff before their relative was admitted ensuring they were kept up to date.
“Staff involved people in decisions about their treatment plans and were aware of their individual interests including social, religious and cultural needs. We saw staff discussing people’s hobbies with them and always having time for friendly chats.
“We were impressed that leaders chose an employee of the month and celebrated long service and retirement of team members. Staff posted on social media, and we saw pictures and posts relating to celebrations and cultural events which created a happy culture where people and staff felt valued and respected.
“All staff should be extremely proud of the care they’re providing to people. They clearly work hard to provide an exceptional service to people, and other mental health services should look to this report to see what they can learn.”
