Our view of the service

Gloucester Royal Hospital Renal Units is operated by Diaverum Facilities Management Limited, who took over as provider in December 2023. The service has not been rated under the new provider.

The service provides haemodialysis to NHS patients over the age of 18 under a contract with the local trust. The service operates 51 dialysis stations across 3 units on the site of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Cotswold unit is the main clinic, and the service also operates Severn unit, both of which are located on the hospital grounds. The service also provides care from a dialysis bay and side room on ward 7B of the main hospital.

Severn and Cotswold units operate from 7am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, with Cotswold unit also accommodating twilight sessions from 7am to midnight on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The unit on ward 7B operates from 7.30am to 6.30 pm 6 days a week, from Monday to Saturday for planned care. The service provides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on-call dialysis for emergency cases.

The provider registered this location in December 2023. A registered manager is in post for Cotswold unit and ward 7b and another registered manager is in post for Severn unit.

The service is registered to carry out the following regulated activities:

We last inspected the service in April 2023 under the previous provider.

We conducted an onsite assessment visit of Gloucester Royal Hospital Renal Units. We assessed quality statements from the safe, effective, responsive, caring and well-led key questions. We rated the service as Good.
