Our view of the service
Muscliff Nursing Home provides accommodation, personal and nursing care for up to 41 people. At the time of our inspection 15 people were living at the service. The service provides care and support to older people, some of whom were living with dementia. The inspection was carried out between 9 and 10 February 2025.
The service was previously in breach of legal regulations related to dignity and respect, safe care and treatment, safeguarding and good governance. Improvements were found at this inspection, and the provider was no longer in breach of these regulations.
This service has been in Special Measures since 12 September 2025. The service is no longer rated as inadequate overall or in any of the key questions. Therefore, this service is no longer in Special Measures.
The service had made improvements and developed a positive and supportive culture that needed to be embedded and sustained further. A staff member said, “We have made significant improvements in our documentation, care delivery, positive behavioural support, and infection control procedures.”
We received positive feedback about the new manager who was described by staff as “approachable and supportive.”
Safeguarding incidents were now monitored effectively, and policies and procedures supported staff to raise any concerns.
Notifications were made as required by law. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience to meet people’s needs. People were now supported by a consistent team of staff who knew them well. People’s rights were now respected, and consent was sought as required. Family members were involved in developing and reviewing care plans. Staff supported people to have choice and control of their lives. Staff understood their responsibilities and worked effectively with health and social care professionals to promote wellbeing and maintain independence.
We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is used to capture the experiences of people who are unable to communicate their experiences with us. We found staff supported people in a meaningful and dignified way. For example when supporting people to eat their meals or when they became distressed.
Since our previous inspection, the provider had increased their oversight of the service and worked with various professionals to make improvements. Additionally, the provider had engaged an independent consultant to support changes to the culture of the service. There had been staff restructuring, including the leadership team and care staff.
People's experience of this service
People and relatives told us they were happy with the staff and care provided by the service. Relatives felt involved in people’s care and told us they felt confident people received safe care. One relative said, “I would say I would not want [person] cared for anywhere else. The Muscliff team are excellent.” Another relative said, “Management is now approachable and transparent in all areas as well as friendly and caring.” We observed kind interactions between staff and people.
