During an assessment under our new approach
We reviewed all quality statements for each Key Questions for this assessment of Douglas Macmillan Hospice. We only assessed the adult patient services provided by Douglas Macmillan Hospice during this assessment; Douglas Macmillan Hospice was last inspected in 2015 under CQC old framework and was rated Good overall.
This was a comprehensive short notice announced inspection. The onsite assessment was undertaken on the 16 and 17 December 2025. The inspection team consisted of 2 CQC inspectors, 1 Nurse specialist advisor and 1 Consultant specialist advisor, both with current experience in hospice care, palliative care and end of life care and it was supported by an operational manager offsite.
During the visit we conducted staff and manager interviews, attended a multi-disciplinary team meeting, and a medical optimisation group meeting, we also reviewed information provided by the hospice. We spoke with 24 members of staff (including managers, nurses, nursing assistants, physiotherapist, domestic staff, catering staff, administrative staff and volunteers. We spoke with 14 patients, 5 relatives and reviewed 15 sets of patient notes.
The hospice delivers care and treatment through an adult 28-bedded inpatient unit, alongside a broad range of community-based services. These include community nurse visiting service, a hospice at home service, a 24/7 advice line, a rapid response team, dementia care services, and wellbeing services. In March 2021 an amalgamation took place of the children’s hospice once known as Donna Louise Trust. Douglas Macmillan Hospice now provides all the above services across two sites in Blurton and Trentham as well as out in the local community.
All these services provide specialist palliative and end of life care to people with progressive, advanced disease and a limited life expectancy. Care and support were provided within the hospice environment and within people’s own homes dependent upon their care preferences and needs.
The service had 2 registered managers in post. A registered manager is a person who has registered with the Care Quality Commission to manage the service and has the legal responsibility for meeting the requirements of the law as does the provider.
During 2024/25, Douglas Macmillan Hospice received 2,610 new referrals to the hospice services, 2,825 patients and their families were cared for and supported by the hospice, in addition 351 carers accessed hospice services.
Between July 2025 and September 2025 Activity data show:
- Inpatient unit 102 admissions with 76.1% bed occupancy
- Community incoming referrals 675 with total community contacts with patients 14030.
- Hospice at Home 109 patients supported with total shifts cover of 1064.
- End of life advice line out of hours contacts and in hours contact total cover of 3661.
- Dementia services new referrals patients 161, new referrals carers 53, with 376 patients supported and 243 carers supported.
- Therapies physio/complimentary face to face contacts 494.
- Counselling and emotional support face to face 809 with 615 other contacts.
- Living well programme 1036 people attended.
- Patient and family support face to face 167 with 182 contacted other ways.
