Our view of the service

The dates of the assessment were 27 August and 2 September 2025.

BPAS Merseyside is operated by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS). Although the service was based in Liverpool it was commissioned to provide a service across the Merseyside area at this location and three satellite locations.

BPAS Merseyside offered consultation, medical assessment including ultrasound scanning, early medical abortion for women with a pregnancy of less than 10 weeks and surgical abortion under local anaesthetic, conscious sedation and general anaesthetic for women with a pregnancy less than 23 weeks and 6 days gestation. Treatment options were determined by the gestation of the pregnancy and patient choice. It also provided counselling and contraceptive advice.

We carried out this assessment based on emerging risk and previous rating of requires improvement and breach of Regulation 12 Safe care and treatment. We assessed the 5 key questions of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

This assessment we found the service had made improvements and the service was no longer in breach of Regulation 12: Safe care and treatment.

From March 2024 to March 2025 the service had provided 3188 treatments.

The service carried out vasectomies, but this was not included as part of our assessment.
